Facebook Wants To Become Your Homepage, Pop Up ‘Moment You Open Your Browser’
Facebook users are being greeted by a message Thursday at the top of their accounts asking them to set the social network as their browser’s homepage.
The initiative is the latest by the social networking titan to get users to spend more time on its website. Millions already have their browsers set to open up with Yahoo, Google or Facebook. But Facebook looks to be making a push to pull away more users in its direction. A guaranteed visit every time someone fires up a new instance of Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer could be huge if enough people catch on.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg clearly wants his website to become the destination users turn to for socially generated content and socially shared news.
Facebook hasn’t said if all users will receive the customized message that says “See what’s happening with [insert random friends’ names] and the rest of your friends the moment you open your browser.” To the left of the message is a button that says “Make Facebook Home.” When you drag the button to near the “Home” icon in your browser and release it over the icon, a message pops up asking you if you want to set Facebook.com as your home page.
Facebook also announced a partnership with Myspace on Thursday that allows people to sync their Myspace accounts with Facebook.
